Why I Started Cottonwood Collective
I'm a pharmacist. I have three kids. I live on a small farm in Tennessee with my husband Michael.
That's the short version of who I am. But here's why I started making tallow skincare in our farmhouse kitchen.
The Slow Build
Before Cottonwood Collective existed, I was already obsessed with ingredient labels.
It started with my kids. Like a lot of moms, I noticed how often "gentle" baby products had ingredient lists I couldn't pronounce. As a pharmacist, I knew exactly what those ingredients did at a chemical level. Some of them I didn't want anywhere near my children's skin.
Then came the eczema. One of my kids developed it, and I started researching. Every cream the pediatrician recommended either didn't work or contained things I didn't trust. I went deeper into the research. I learned that the modern skincare industry was mostly built around shelf life and profit margins, not skin health.
That's how I found tallow.
The science fascinated me. Beef tallow is bioidentical to human sebum, which means your skin literally recognizes it as its own. It absorbs cleanly. It's rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K in a form your skin actually uses. It worked for our great-grandmothers because it works, period. The seed oil industry just convinced us we needed something newer.
I started rendering tallow at home. Mixing in jojoba oil. Whipping it into something soft and beautiful. Using it on my kids and on my own face.
It worked. Our skin had never looked better.
The Push
I had been making it for our family for a while, but I never thought about turning it into a business. I'm a pharmacist. I have three kids. I had no shortage of things to do.
Then Michael was diagnosed with cancer.
Cancer treatment changes everything. His skin became fragile in ways I had never seen. His lips cracked and bled. His hands felt like sandpaper. His oncology team had a long list of ingredients to avoid, parabens, synthetic fragrances, sulfates, and most of it was in every product on the shelf at Target.
I sat in chemo waiting rooms scrolling through ingredient lists on my phone, getting more frustrated by the day. The "natural" brands hid synthetic fragrance. The clean beauty brands cost $80 a jar. Nothing was clean enough or simple enough for someone whose immune system was already under attack.
So I made it for him.
I rendered a fresh batch of tallow. Mixed in organic jojoba oil. Whipped it into something soft. Brought it to the next infusion. Within a week his skin felt human again.
Friends started asking for jars. Then friends of friends. Then strangers.
That's when I knew this had to be bigger than our kitchen.
Why This Brand Exists
Cottonwood Collective exists because real ingredients work and modern skincare made us forget that.
I'm not making this in a factory. I'm not adding 40 ingredients so it can sit on a shelf for three years. I'm not marketing to a trend. I'm pouring small batches in our farmhouse kitchen, using grass-fed tallow from Tennessee farms, organic oils, and locally sourced beeswax.
Every jar is made fresh. Every label is designed with care. Every product on the site is something I use on my own family, including my husband during the most fragile season of his life.
That's the standard. That's the only standard.
What You Can Expect From Us
Five ingredients or less. Always. If you can't pronounce it, it's not in our products.
Transparency. We tell you exactly where our tallow comes from, where our beeswax is sourced, and what's in every jar.
Honesty. I'll tell you which product is right for your skin even if it means you spend less. I'll tell you if I think you should try a sample first. I'll tell you if I think tallow isn't right for you at all. I am a pharmacist before I am a business owner.
Small batch. Made fresh weekly. Never mass-produced. Never compromised.
Real connection. When you email us, you're emailing me. Not a customer service team. Me. I read every message and respond personally.
Thank You for Being Here
If you've read this far, thank you. Truly. Building this brand has been the hardest and most meaningful thing I've ever done outside of being a wife and a mom.
If you've been following us from the beginning, thank you for trusting us when we were just an idea.
If you're new here, welcome. I'm so glad you found us.
Cottonwood Collective is small. It's slow. It's deeply personal. And that's exactly how we want to keep it.
Here's to clean ingredients, honest skincare, and the kind of brand that treats you like family. Because to us, you are.
